Student Wellbeing

Well-being is intrinsically linked to all aspects of a student’s experience at school and beyond. It encompasses physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and social health and development, and contributes to an understanding of self, to developing and maintaining relationships with others, and to participation in an active, healthy lifestyle.

Lancers International School has adapted CASEL’s five interrelated sets of cognitive, affective and behavioral competencies. The definitions of the five competency clusters for students are:

Self Awareness: The ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes accurately assessing one’s strengths and limitations and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence and optimism.

Self Management: The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working towards achieving personal and academic goals.

Social Awareness: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, to understand social and ethical norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and support.

Relationship Skills: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict constructively, and seeking and offering help when needed.

Responsible Decision-Making: The ability to make constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on consideration of ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms, the realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and the well-being of self and others.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is an important aspect of our school and we take great pride in nurturing our students. We believe that our students can be more enterprising and successful in an environment which is supportive, optimistic and encouraging.

As a pioneering institution, we provide a healthy and conducive atmosphere which supports our students and enables their development of character and well-being.

We ensure that our students know that they are valued as individuals with their own unique needs, strengths and potential, which makes them more eager to engage with the world around them.

As a result, our students are intellectually competent and emotionally intelligent thinkers, who are sensitive to the needs and beliefs of others but with strong views and values of their own.

Personal Development

Our goal has always been to give our students a well-rounded form of education. That not only includes academic excellence or developing skills in the field of music, art, theatre and sports, but also to help our students develop emotional intelligence. The more emotionally intelligent they’ll be, the greater they’ll have the ability to empathise and care.

Lancers is a place where open communication is the norm. Our students have the space to talk about things that concern them and affect them directly or indirectly.

Though our students are taught to be independent and think for themselves, at Lancers, we set aside dedicated time to talk to our students about things that affect them on a day-to-day basis.

For instance, we often speak to our students about time management, how to find a way to deal with anger and other negative emotions, and how to deal with disagreements, among other concerns. These conversations are the basis for helping our students channel their emotions in a more positive and productive way, and for them to be prepared to handle any situation or challenge that may come their way.

Wellbeing Programme

Early Years: Planting the Seeds of Wellbeing
Lancers International School recognizes that fostering well-being begins from the very first stages of a child’s education. In the Early Years program, the school employs the CASEL framework (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) to create a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment that lays the foundation for emotional intelligence and resilience. In addition to this, the school integrates wellbeing lessons into the timetable, where students engage in age-appropriate activities that promote self-awareness, emotional expression, and positive relationships.

Primary Years: Building Resilience and Self-Discovery
As students transition into the Primary and Middle Years, the emphasis on well-being continues to evolve within the framework of CASEL and the Zone of Regulation. The school’s curriculum is designed to promote academic excellence and foster essential life skills. Wellbeing lessons are strategically integrated into the timetable, providing dedicated periods for students to engage in discussions, activities, and projects that promote emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and stress management. In addition, the subject of Personal, Social, and Physical Education (PSPE) is a dedicated subject area within the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP). It is designed to foster the development of essential life skills, emotional intelligence, and social competencies among young learners. PSPE goes beyond traditional academic subjects by focusing on the emotional and interpersonal aspects of a child’s development.

Middle Years: Navigating Identity and Purpose
Adolescence can be particularly challenging as students grapple with identity formation and future aspirations. The well-being program for Grades 6-10 at Lancers International School is designed to address the unique needs and challenges that students in this age group face as they transition through adolescence and prepare for higher levels of education. This comprehensive programme combines elements of emotional support, skill-building, leadership development, and community engagement to foster holistic well-being and personal growth among students. Through workshops, activities, and discussions, students are guided to enhance their self-awareness, emotional regulation, and relationship-building skills. Stress management techniques, career exploration, and leadership development opportunities equip students to manage academic pressures, set goals, and take on leadership roles. Engaging in community service projects fosters empathy, responsibility, and a sense of contributing positively to society.

Senior Years: Holistic Growth for Future Leaders
The wellbeing program for Grades 11-12 at Lancers International School is a comprehensive and advanced initiative designed to support students as they prepare for higher education and adulthood. By building upon earlier years’ foundations, the program focuses on emotional resilience, career readiness, leadership development, and responsible global citizenship. Through mentorship, workshops, and immersive experiences, students refine their emotional intelligence, develop practical skills for stress management, and explore career paths. Leadership opportunities, service projects, and discussions on global issues nurture a sense of responsibility and empathy. The program prepares students for university applications, career choices, and the challenges of independent living. It equips them with the confidence, independence, and knowledge needed to thrive beyond school. With a focus on holistic growth and long-term well-being, the well-being program for Grades 11-12 empowers students to embark on their next chapter with a strong sense of purpose, preparedness, and a global perspective.

Community Service Embedded in the IB Programme: Making a Difference
Lancers International School takes an extra step towards holistic well-being by embedding community service within the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. This initiative encourages students of all ages to actively engage with their local and global communities, fostering empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility. Through community service projects, students not only apply their academic knowledge in real-world contexts but also develop a deeper understanding of societal issues. This commitment to community service aligns perfectly with the ethos of fostering well-being and creating conscientious global citizens.

Student Council and Class Prefects: Fostering Leadership and Peer Support
Lancers International School places a strong emphasis on student leadership. The school encourages the formation of student councils and appoints class prefects across all age groups. These student-led bodies play a vital role in promoting a culture of well-being within the school. Student council members and prefects collaborate with teachers and administrators to plan wellbeing initiatives, organize events, and provide peer support. These roles offer students the opportunity to develop leadership skills, empathy, and a sense of responsibility, all of which contribute to the overall well-being of the school community.

Cross-Program Integration: A Seamless Wellbeing Continuum
What sets Lancers International School apart is its commitment to creating a seamless well-being continuum that spans all educational stages, integrating the IB, CASEL and the Zone of Regulation frameworks. The school’s integrated approach ensures that the principles of well-being are reinforced and built upon as students progress from early years to Grade 12. This continuity not only strengthens the students’ ability to manage challenges but also fosters a sense of belonging and community throughout their educational journey.

Lancers International School’s well-being programs exemplify the institution’s dedication to nurturing students’ holistic development. By prioritizing emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-discovery, and integrating wellbeing lessons into the timetable, the school equips students with the tools they need to succeed academically and thrive as individuals. Through a combination of targeted counselling sessions, supportive environments, comprehensive programs, a student leadership structure, and community service initiatives, Lancers International School stands as a beacon of holistic education that prepares students not only for academic excellence but for a lifetime of well-being and fulfilment.
