We will be resuming our ‘Buddy Reading Program’ which aims to improve reading skills and foster a love for reading among students. We will incorporate this as part of our bridge programme where a grade level is paired with the next grade level readers to build social and communication skills.
The primary goals of a Buddy Reading Program will include:
Improving Reading Skills: Buddies work together to read aloud, take turns reading, or listen to each other read. This provides struggling readers with support and guidance from more skilled readers, helping them improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
Building Confidence: By reading with a buddy, students who may lack confidence in their reading abilities can feel supported and encouraged. Successes achieved with their buddy can boost their self-esteem and motivation to continue working on their reading skills.
Promoting Positive Peer Relationships: Buddy Reading Programs encourage positive interactions between students of different ages or abilities. This can foster empathy, cooperation, and a sense of belonging among participants.
Instilling a Love for Reading: Reading with a buddy can make the reading experience more enjoyable and engaging for students. Sharing stories, discussing characters, and exploring new books together can help cultivate a lifelong love for reading.
This will happen weekly till the end of the academic year for the PYP students. They can even bring a book from home if they wish to share with their buddy.
