Why in schools<\/a> we\u2019re taught what to learn, but not how to learn? If education and knowledge are\u00a0so important, both in school and in life, why is it that we\u2019re not taught this basic skill?<\/p>\n

The behavior of traditional schools<\/a><\/h5>\n

  1. <\/span>Because schools<\/a> aim to fill the student’s brains with basic info (required to pass tests (that lead to certificates (that lead to jobs))).<\/li>\n
  2. <\/span>They do not aim to help children to think for themselves. They do not teach the art of\u00a0learning.<\/li>\n
  3. <\/span>Do not teach the art of seeking out, experiencing or creating knowledge in\u00a0any\u00a0given field. Instead, they provide desiccated, frozen inedible stuff in the form of directives or commandments.<\/li>\n
  4. <\/span>Hardly encourage students to\u00a0try out things and figure out ways of doing things or improving things.\u00a0These are subjective qualitative life skills.<\/li>\n
  5. <\/span>They leave out the\u00a0whys\u00a0and mostly concentrate on the\u00a0whats\u00a0and\u00a0hows\u00a0of things. These are easier to test and grade.<\/li>\n
  6. <\/span>Never look at\u00a0why-not\u00a0and\u00a0what-ifs\u00a0that are at the core of learning.<\/li>\n
  7. <\/span>They abstract things away from the concrete stuff of daily life.<\/li>\n
  8. <\/span>They test for individual work and not\u00a0interpersonal skills of cooperation towards common goals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some experts are concerned that schools<\/a> today aren\u2019t teaching kids the skills they need to succeed. A culture of testing, they say, is preventing the development of \u201clife skills.\u201d Curricular content aside, what do you think you are really learning at school<\/strong>? Are you getting skills that will carry you through life?<\/p>\n

    The ever-growing emphasis is on academic performance and test scores. This means many children aren\u2019t developing life skills like self-control, motivation, focus, and resilience, which are far better predictors of long-term success than high grades.<\/p>\n

    One of the single biggest differences between \u2018quick learners\u2019 and \u2018slow learners\u2019, \u2018good students\u2019 and \u2018bad students\u2019, some students are \u2018smarter\u2019 or \u2018more intelligent\u2019 than others, but those some students simply have better and more effective learning and study habits than others.<\/p>\n

    Learning\u00a0how to learn\u00a0must surely be one of life\u2019s most important skills. It is surprising they don\u2019t teach it at school<\/strong>. Learning how to learn is the most important life skill.\u00a0Learning is making connections between\u00a0what you know, what you don\u2019t and what you want to know.<\/p>\n

    If you know the \u2018right\u2019 answer, but don\u2019t know\u00a0why\u00a0it\u2019s the right answer, then you haven\u2019t really learned anything. Points for learning to learn:<\/h5>\n

    1. <\/span>Copy the best: Read\/watch\/listen to the best in the world at whatever it is you wish to learn, and then take their best strategies and techniques and make them your own. For example- if you want to become a great actor \u2013 watch the best actors.<\/li>\n
    2. <\/span>Learn the information in a variety of ways: Learning a new subject is always most effective when you learn the information in a variety of ways simultaneously:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
