Senior School’s Annual Play at Lancers – One of the Top Schools in Gurgaon

The lights are off, the audience unaware of what to expect; they are holding their breath and are impatiently waiting for the performance to begin. ‘This sacred place,’ as the school’s drama teacher Mr. Raj Kumar calls the stage, is ready for the actors and actresses to share the story of Our Town. Written in 1938 by Thornton Wilder, it is a three-act play, which shows a fictional town in America, between the years 1901 and 1913. It brings to life everyday lives of its citizens.

The script is remarkable in more ways than one. It will surprise you with minimum props and the absence of the curtain. It is the acting, the dialogues and the lights which help reveal the storyline. The students portrayed each role marvelously; acting was realistic and persuasive to an extent that it was difficult to remember it was acting and these people weren’t real people with real concerns! The emotions demonstrated were deep and complex, immersing the viewers and making them feel like they were actually witnessing the tragic events in the play in real life.

Nowhere can all the effort put into staging a play be visible as it is during rehearsals, behind the scenes, and backstage. It’s like a whole new world has come to life. One can see the costumes ready to be put on, make-up being applied, actors nervously pacing to and fro, repeating their lines, changing expressions, props moved and then set into place. It’s all nerves and excitement.

Finally..

In this particular case, the production led by Mr. Raj was a success. It involved a lot of hard work, many weeks of practice and dedication from everyone: the crew members, the young actors and teachers. The students put their hearts into their work, showcased their talent and the audience was able to feel it. Everyone in the audience was so moved by the performance. It was all because the students chose to bring to life these characters with complex inner lives.

It’s moments such as these which make us realize that we’re giving our students at Lancers, one of the top schools in Gurgaon, the right kind of education. A perfect blend of academics and other activities such as theatre, which opens our students to a whole new dimension of creativity. It’s also a great way of learning how to work with your peers and learning from one another. Most importantly, theatre is a great way to boost self-confidence and to learn from the characters our students get to play on stage. Theatre is another way for us at Lancers, to initiate dialogue about newer perspectives. Perspectives that are different and add to the learning curve of our students.
